Becoming an Auto Mechanic

Auto mechanic training can set you up with the necessary skills for a first-class career. As automotive technology changes faster than ever, mechanics need the right career education to make sure they're up-to-date on the latest developments. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that "formal automotive technician training is the best preparation for these challenging technology-based jobs."

Auto Mechanic Career and Salary Outlook

The BLS reports that the median income for auto mechanics in 2006 was about $33,800 per year, with higher wages reported by government and dealership employees. The number of jobs available is projected to grow faster than average over the next decade; the U.S. currently employs about 773,000 auto mechanics today, and expects to need about 100,000 more through 2016. Job prospects, concludes the BLS, are "very good."
